Ski enthusiasts received some good news as Breckenridge Ski Resort recently announced plans to expand in 2013 after receiving the okay to do so by the U.S. Forest Service. Part of the plan includes adding 543 acres of mountain terrain close to the northernmost part of the popular vacation spot, which is known among tourist and locals alike as Peak 6.
This summit is part of the 2.3 million-acre White River National Forest. The expanded area will benefit advanced skiers, as more than 140 acres of the terrain is designated as experts only. Of the remaining 400 acres, 45 percent will be for moderate-level snow bunnies, 15 percent for advanced skiers and 40 percent for experts, according to the Los Angeles Times.
''Peak 6 will be a tremendous addition to Breckenridge, significantly improving the guest experience by adding both new terrain and lift capacity,'' said Rob Katz, chairman and CEO of Vail Resorts, according to Breckenridge.com. "In addition, the new terrain provides access to intermediate runs and high alpine bowl skiing that will be enjoyed by a wide variety of our guests.''
