The eight women here, who are known as the Mystic Mermaids, hold traditional jobs by day and transform themselves into these captivating creatures once the sun sets.
"It's really enjoyable work, and I feel privileged to do it," 26-year-old Denver resident Allison Wos told CNN. "Our audiences get a kick out of it, too, and seem mesmerized by our shows."
As patrons dine at the aquarium's restaurant and look on, these fancy females twist and turn while immersed in enormous saltwater tanks and surrounded by various forms of sealife ranging from sea turtles to eels to Queensland groupers.
♦ Dive Bar – Sacramento, California
Open seven days a week until 2 a.m., Dive Bar is changing the way we think of mermaids. "Mermen" as they are affectionately known, participate in the show and according to one employee, are a big hit.
"The crowd goes wild when the guys hop in the tank and are treated almost like rock stars," said Rachel Smith, a mermaid at the bar. "The guys who work as mermen are very macho and portray a warrior and tough guy look inside the tank."
