Labor Day is fast approaching and in an effort to enjoy the last few days of summer, 33 million Americans are planning on traveling at least 50 miles from home between August 30 and September 3, according to a report from AAA.
This number represents a 2.9 percent or 32.1 million increase from 2011. If in fact this many people vacation over the holiday weekend, it would be the largest number since 2008 when the recession began affecting travel plans.
"In the absence of strong economic growth that might fuel a significant boost in travel volume, it is an encouraging sign that Americans continue to prioritize travel," said Bill Sutherland, vice president of AAA Travel Services, in a statement.
Furthermore, the travel organization reported that 85 percent of Americans going places this Labor Day weekend will be getting to their destination by car, which is up 3.1 percent from 2011. Air travel has increased by 3.7 percent from 2011 to 8 percent this year.
"For those people looking for a new destination here at home, small cities and towns are becoming more popular," said Courtney Scott, senior editor at Travelocity.
However, the number of vacationers traveling by means of trains, buses and cruise ships is expected to drop by 0.2 percent.
