Illegal cab driver tries to evade police in high-speed chase with family onboard

One of the most hectic parts of traveling is getting to where you're going. Trying to flag down taxicabs can be very stressful, and navigating through an unfamiliar city via public transportation can seem impossible. But, even once travelers utilize one of these services, they may be in for the ride of their lives – and that's usually not a good thing.

This was the case for a family of four from Panama who innocently jumped into a cab at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York last February. Little did they know that their driver was unlicensed and illegally soliciting passengers at the airport, according to the Queens District Attorney's office.

With the family in tow, he sped off from the airport and was promptly pursued by police. One of the passengers had to grab the wheel and intentionally crash the vehicle into a guardrail to end the high-speed chase.

"As this case clearly illustrates, unregulated taxis and unscrupulous drivers – who are not properly licensed and who do not carry appropriate insurance – put passengers at serious risk," District Attorney Richard Brown said in a statement.
